  • I am long time user of GPS Systems. I use to do a lot of off-road activity and there was a time when I end up lost on a mountain climb. On the way down the mountain the sun was going down and I became a bit lost. I was so thankful to have a portable GPS handheld with me. I would have never found my way back before dark. For some reason the mountain will change on you and when it does, you can easily find yourself lost.

Back in the good ole’ days it was a topo map and a Brunton compass, out in the open this was fine- you still had to pay attention- but when you got in the woods it was a whole different ball game. I haven’t tried a gps in the woods yet but I think I soon will be.

Hi, you stopped by my blog and left a nice comment about XHeader so I decided to come by and return the favor! I like that you have all the plugins activated, they will help you over time to gain more visitors and hopefully some regulars, too! They encourage interaction on your blog and you know what’s one of the best things? Every comment you get adds “fresh” content to your site, so your blog is literally updating itself, which is great for the search engines. ;)

  • Admin:

    Thanks, I appreciate the comment.

  • I agree that this plugin is a great booster for blogs. for the point of view of the blog owner altough is not a set and forget. If ppl love their blogs they should really take care of them on a daily basis in order to don’t stack up on spam and crap posts. on the point of the visitor, this is a great motivator to encourage ppl to make a decent post on any specific subject, contributing this way to enrich the blog content. so it is a win win scenario in my POV.
    thank you for sharing

Hi, I enjoyed looking around your GPS for Hiking pages.
I’ve only recently been taking an interest in geocaching. Right now I only have a car GPS (and I have a website on the subject)
but I can see I’ll need a handheld one of these days. Cheers.

  • Plug ins like these will help site owners and blog owners like never before. But its success remains in the hand of blog owner who must give good amount of time to moderate their blogs.

BTW I think that using GPS for hiking is a good idea, but somehow takes away the charm of finding the right trail when lost!! Got lost myself couple of time, and the joy I has when I found myself back on right track still bring smile on my face. But that’s just me I guess!!

    Hi
    Came over via Petra’s website.
As Petra says, it’s nice to leave comments for people who are considerate enough to comment on other sites.

I’m a great lover of the CommentLuv plugin and I installed it on my site to reward commenters and to return the favour to commenters who had it on their sites.

I’m a new convert to GPS devices. So far I’ve only played around with car GPS systems but I can so how useful handhelds and portables could be. Geocaching sounds like a lot of fun too.

I own a Tom Tom GPS I usually use it for my car but i do know that my gps can track longitude and latitude. This could be useful then you have lost direction and don’t know where you are heading. This could be useful while tracking.

  • I think GPS systems are the greatest thing since slice bread. Great when you’re in an unfamiliar area at night when you can’t really see road signs or landmarks very clearly. I use an iphone 3gs with google maps and it works well in most cases. You can use a Blackberry as well but unless it’s 3g network, don’t bother trying to look up an address with it.

  • I typically take one of the handheld or wrist watch gps units when I go out hiking or camping. They it make so easy to navigate around in the woods.

I have not really had any experience using off-road GPS, because I rarely (if ever) go off-roading. I’m just not that interested.

  • I used a GPS one time while needing to take a 15 minute journey by car, I was unsure of the route. We used the GPS and two hours later finally arrived at our destination! On the way back we used the simple landmark technique and it took us ten minutes!

I use a Garmin forerunner 305 every time I am out for a run. I could not imagine to run without my GPS watch. It is a great tool, you can analyze your route when you get back home from your training.

  • Nicole from life coach courses:

GPS Systems are great. You just have to make sure you have the maps for the places you’re traveling to if your system does not auto update. The best function I’ve found is when the system automatically helps you reroute when there’s a traffic jam or the road is blocked.

With Garmin training center gps and software, you can analyze data with interactive graphs that chart your pace, time, distance and heart rate. You can also overlay your run on a map so you can pinpoint specific areas and see how elevation and other factors affect your performance.

  • Not much of a hiker here so I cannot attest to the advantages of using a GPS. My hiking consists of trails that are clearly marked that will often have drinking fountains and gift shops at the end. GPS for driving, that is a necessity.

  • i have a wonder experience using GPS, because we have to be home exactly one hour from the party and suddenly we lost our way. and every one was worried because our parent’s will get mad to us.

good thing my friend bring her GSP and and find our way home.

  • Jon from Gift Picker:

I’ve just bought myself a GPS, and I blooming love it man!!

  • Colin from Womens Hiking Shoes:

I have an old Garmin Etrex GPS which I mainly use for cycling but I haven’t done much hiking with it yet. To be honest, I know most of the local footpaths anyway so I don’t much navigational help with them. I do intend to use the device for walks in other areas.

My comments about the device come mainly from cycling with it, but they would also apply to walking.

It is very reassuring to know exactly where you are to within a few metres/yards. I always carry a paper map for backup but the GPS has been extremely reliable so I haven’t had much need for the maps.

I do all my route planning back at home using Memory Map on my PC and upload the routes into the device before I leave the house. From then on, I just follow the breadcrumb trail on the GPS screen. If I see something interesting off-trail, I can go and check it out, and use the GPS tracklog to return to my planned route later.
