I have an old Garmin Etrex GPS which I mainly use for cycling but I haven’t done much hiking with it yet. To be honest, I know most of the local footpaths anyway so I don’t much navigational help with them. I do intend to use the device for walks in other areas.

My comments about the device come mainly from cycling with it, but they would also apply to walking.

It is very reassuring to know exactly where you are to within a few metres/yards. I always carry a paper map for backup but the GPS has been extremely reliable so I haven’t had much need for the maps.

I do all my route planning back at home using Memory Map on my PC and upload the routes into the device before I leave the house. From then on, I just follow the breadcrumb trail on the GPS screen. If I see something interesting off-trail, I can go and check it out, and use the GPS tracklog to return to my planned route later.

i have a wonder experience using GPS, because we have to be home exactly one hour from the party and suddenly we lost our way. and every one was worried because our parent’s will get mad to us.

good thing my friend bring her GSP and and find our way home.
then we just arrived exactly our parent’s expected.

Car GPS could be used for hiking, but if you are going to really rural areal it is always advisable to carry an Satellite phone, compose, geographic map & professional Global positioning unit

Not much of a hiker here so I cannot attest to the advantages of using a GPS. My hiking consists of trails that are clearly marked that will often have drinking fountains and gift shops at the end. GPS for driving, that is a necessity.
